The Technical Rescue Basics Course April-May 2009
I serve as an instructor for the Technical Rescue Basics Course (TRBC) for San Bernardino County Sheriff’s SAR. For the past two weekends (including 6pm-10pm on Fridays) a number of students took the first step in gaining proficiency in technical rope rescue. The first weekend is a combination of classroom and practical skills, while the second weekend is spent in the field using the skills. They also have to pass a written exam and a practical skills check-off to pass the class.
The course curriculum includes material on the physics of rescue systems where students learn about the forces involved in rescue systems, and how to design safe anchors and litter evacuation systems. In order to participate in rope rescues in San Bernardino County, SAR members must pass this course as a minimum. There is also a team-level certification that must be passed which requires more advanced rope rescue training by most members.
